Birth Art Classes and Workshops

What Is Birth Art?

Birth Art is a process-oriented, peaceful, and mindful way to prepare for birth, postpartum, and parenthood.

By helping parents activate their intuition, trust their inner knowing, and stay present in each moment of the art-making process, they can activate new insights about themselves, their hopes, their hesitations, and their beliefs about birth, and about themselves. (Not to mention that honing intuition and practicing presence are perfect ways to prepare for birth and parenthood as well!)

Each session can last between 30 minutes to one hour, during which expecting parents will be guided through a grounding meditation, a guided art prompt, uninterrupted art making, then closing with time for reflection on the process itself (not the product) and to celebrate your insights.

Art, Birth, Parenthood…How Are They Related?

Stepping Into the Unknown

To walk the path of birth is to walk in mystery.

Making Birth Art is a low-stakes, high-value way to practice stepping into the Unknown.

By making birth art, you will gain wisdom and insight on how you walk through uncharted territory, how you decide your next step, and how you keep going even if it isn’t looking like you had first imagined.

Process Over Product

Just as we cannot control how our birth or parenting journeys will unfold, when making a piece of art, the end product might be very different from how we first imagined it to be.

Intuitive Preparation

You’ve read all the books, bookmarked all the websites with the best baby gear, and installed the car seat. You’re practically prepared, but what about being internally, spiritually prepared? Making Birth Art helps pregnant families to slow down in the weeks leading up to the most transformative moment in their lives- becoming a parent.

Your Questions, Answered

  • Right off the bat, please know that the pieces you create in a birth art session should not be museum-worthy. Part of the process is exploring the stories we have told ourselves about what we are “good at” or “can do” and where they came from. Leave your judgments and expectations at the door, let your critical brain take a walk around the block for a bit, and leave yourself some space for magic to happen.

  • Please have large paper available. Most birth art classes will require the use of chalk pastels, which can be messy (just like birth!) so make sure you have a space where you can spread out and create on an easily-cleaned surface. Some participants also like to have hand wipes available.

If chalk pastels are not accessible for you, any non-professional art materials (Crayola watercolor paint, crayons, markers) will also be just fine!

Some classes will require the use of clay (usually the last session in the 4-class birth art series.) The instructor will give further instructions on the type of clay required before the class session begins.

You will also need a journal and a pen, and a candle if you like.

  • Birth Art is a creative, experiential process created by the folks at Birthing From Within in order to support personal insight and inner exploration during the birth and postpartum period. Birth Art is non-clinical and is not in any way designed to diagnose or treat any mental health disorder.

By contrast, art therapy is overseen by a licensed clinical mental health professional, in which art is used as a medium to diagnose, analyze, and treat clinical mental health disorders such as anxiety or depression.
